COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

My Dear Cousins,

Have you ever tried to write a play? Little Southlanders have suggested at various times that we should have a play-writing competition, so I have decided to hold one and see how popular it is. In the Chronicle this week you will find one about spring, and next week there will be another for you to read and study. After you have read these plays see if you can find a subject and write one yourself. The closing date will be November 6, so you have plenty of time to think about it and decide on a subject. I. hope to see lots of entries for this new type of competition, so put on your very best thinking caps, my cousins.

Are you beginning now to collect small toys to put in the Christmas stockings you are making for the hospital? Put them away in a safe place where baby brothers and sisters cannot reach, and then when you have made the stocking of net, fill it with the toys and tie a label on to show whether the finished stocking is for a boy or a girl. It would never do to give a boy patient a doll! There will be some more Original Verse in the Chronicle next Saturday, and the following week there will be room for some new ones. Those cousins who have not yet entered poems for competitions should try their hands at poetry, choosing the subjects they find easiest,, and then if they think the results are satisfactory they could send them in for our Original Verse column. The only way to discover if you can write is to try, and the only way to improve is to practise.

Your loving,
