N.Z. JOURNALIST WITH ROYAL NAVY

REPRESENTATIVE OF EMPIRE PRESS

Mr Trevor Ross, a former New Zealand journalist, at present a member of the staff of Australian Associated Press in London has been selected to represent the Empire Press with the Royal Navy. Mr Ross worked on newspapers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and was a member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. He came to Australia in 1933 and joined the London staff of Australian Associated Press in 1937.

Mr Ross has been a member of the staff of the Australian Associated Press in London for the last two years. He was formerly on the staffs of The New Zealand Herald, Auckland, The Dominion, Wellington, The Press, Christchurch, and The Melbourne Star. For the last 18 months Mr Ross has contributed a weekly letter from London to The Southland Times.

ULSTER’S SHARE IN WAR EFFORT RECRUITING PROGRESSING FAVOURABLY

(British Official Wireless) (Received October 11, 8.30 p.m.) RUGBY, October 10.

Ulster’s contribution to the Empire war effort was referred to by the Prime Minister (Lord Craigavon) in the Ulster House of Commons today. He said that recruiting for the three services was progressing very favourably and recruiting centres had been established at Belfast, Omagh, Londonderry and Enniskillen.

During September, regular units attained the full number required, while recruiting for the third anti-aircraft brigade was so strong that it'was hoped it would be at full strength within another month.

The number of people in Ulster now enrolled for national service exceed 25,000 and applications are coming in at the rate of 2000 a week.

BURMA DEFENCE COUNCIL CONSTITUTED

In Burma, as elsewhere, war conditions have necessitated a redistribution of functions, both in the structure of the Government and in the relation of the Government to the industries of the country and the activities of the civilian population. Sir Archibald Cochrane, the Governor of Burma, has constituted the Burma Defence Council, the purpose of which is to facilitate the expeditious disposal of many questions which, in war conditions, affect the responsibilities of several departments of the Government and the iriterests of various elements in the community.
