ELABORATE NAZI TRADE PLAN

PENDING INVITATION TO NEUTRALS

DETENTION f OF BRITISH SHIPS BY SOVIET ,

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 6, 7.5 p.m.)

NEW YORK, October 5. The Danish newspaper Politiken learns' that. Dr Hjalmar Schacht, former President of the Reichsbank. has prepared an elaborate plan for trade agreements, affecting European trade from the Baltic to the Balkans, which neutrals will be invited by Berlin to accept. The central point ..of the plan' is that all neutral exports will be sent to Germany, which will pass on to other neutrals the commodities Germany does not require. Captured Danish ships will soon be released from Germany without their cargoes, but Germany will pay for the seized goods aboard . them. Mr G. E. R. Gedye, in a despatch from Moscow to The New York Times says that British circles have not denied the reports that 12 British and five Swedish steamers loaded with timber and fer-. tilizer have been detained by the Soviet at Murmansk, ostensibly after a German request. The British, howeyer, are optimistic of their early release, possibly through an arrangement cancelling the British detention of vessels loaded with lathes, cocoa beans and rubber consigned to the Soviet, which caused a great outcry in the Soviet Press. Though it. is unlikely .that.‘the rubber can be shipped, as it is among the war emergencies, it is considered that the British are not trying to cut off Soviet trade and are apparently willing to ship many much-needed commodities which Germany is unable to supply. Whatever the truth, there are persistent reports that Russia is seeking Scandinavian tonnage to ship timber to England. Such offers would be viewed with suspicion. It is pointed out that the cargoes would be paid; for before leaving Russia, after which the Soviet would no longer be interested in their fate.

MAORIS’ FINE RECORD IN LAST WAR RECALLED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, October 5. . The announcement that New Zealand has authorized the formation of a Maori battalion for home or overseas service recalls the fine record of this remarkable race in the last war. . Gallipoli where many Maoris gained distinction and where they suffered many casualties because of their extreme daring is first remembered in Britain. The equally-fine service given by the Maoris in France is also warmly remembered.
