GERMAN SHIP WITH CARGO FOR N.Z.

DIVERSION TO PORT IN CHILE (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 6. Advice has been received that the North German Lloyd steamer Frankfiirt,. of 5500 tons gross, which was schedtded to reach Auckland from New Orleans arid .other Gulf of Mexico ports about September, reached Talcahuano (Chile) after being diverted. The Frankfurt, commanded by Captain Freese, left New Orleans on August 11 and cleared Panama Canal a week later. No more word of her ’movements was received in Auckland until the advice of her arrival at the Chilean port, but it is presumed that on receipt of orders issued to all German merchantmen about a week before the outbreak of war, she made hasty tracks from mid-Pacific to neutral territory. Steps are being taken by the consignees of her shipment of 4600 tons of cargo valued at about £20,000 to arrange for its transhipment to the Dominion. This move is headed by the principal consignees, the New Zealand Farmers’ Fertilizer Company, Limited, and the Challenge Phosphate Company, Limited, who have between them 4000 tons of sulphur for Auckland and New Plymouth which was loaded at Gulf of Mexico- ports. The general cargo for Auckland, Lyttelton and Dunedin includes glucose, resin, turpentine and timber and a quantity of furniture for Jewish refugees which was loaded by the steamer at Hamburg.
