REFUNDS OF DUTY ON MOTOR-SPIRIT
AMENDMENTS TO RATES ANNOUNCED Advice about the amended rates of refunds of duty on motor-spirit consequent upon the passing of the Customs Goods Amendment Act 1939, which took effect on August 2, has been received by the Chief ' Postmaster; at Invercargill (Mr H. Miller). The alterations provide that the owners of vessels, other than those used exclusively in the fishing industry for commercial purposes, obtain a refund at the rate of 6d a gallon, whereas aircraft or any vessel engaged exclusively in the fishing industry for commercial purposes, receive a refund of 1/- a gallon. In the case of motor-spirit consumed for purposes other than those mentioned, the rate is now lOd a gallon. Previously, 8d a gallon was allowed on aircraft and fishing vessels and 6d in other cases.
Applicants for refunds for the quarter ended September 30, 1939, should therefore show the quantities purchased up to and from August 2 in their applications, which are now being accepted at the various post offices. As subsequent alterations to the ; application forms are not acceptable, the best method is for the column marked “number of gallons purchased” to the bottom of the lower “total” column, to be divided into two columns and the appropriate particulars about 1 both purchases and consumption, shown m each. This will expedite dealing with the claims and obviate the necessity of fresh applications being obtained by the post office.
