Compulsory Service Advocated

Compulsory service within the Dominion, so that every man might be placed in the position in which he could best serve his country, was advocated strongly on Wednesday night by a deputation representing farming interests which waited on the Canterbury Progress League. The drawing up of a national register of all men was suggested, and particular emphasis laid on the desirability of keeping key men in farming at work on the farms, so that the Government’s objective of increased production might be maintained. It was finally agreed, after members of the deputation and many members of the league executive had spoken, all on the same theme —that of the need for compulsory service—that a memorandum setting out the views of the meeting, and asking for the Government’s policy, be sent immediately to the acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser).
