GALLANT CHIEF’S RECORD
BLAYDON IS HIGHLY RATED ERIN’S VIEW A LIKELY NOVICE Second forfeits for the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes are due on October 6. New Owner Horse Power has been acquired by his trainer, J. Fraser, and he raced in his colours at Hutt Park on Saturday. Stud Item A four-year-old mare by Llewellyn from Foreign Mission, a half-sister by Happy Voyage to Grand Mogul and Aspirant, has been booked to Dillon Hall. Likely Type One of the very few pacers working at Riverton is Erin’s View, a five-year-old mare by Erin’s King from Invincible, a John Dillon mare. Erin’s View only raced once last term but is a fine type of pacer and has been responsible for some good work. An Increase The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will distribute £13,150 in stakes at its November meeting. Last year the sum given was £12,650.
Blaydon’s Success Blaydon raced up to the high opinions held of him when he won in convicing style at Hutt Park and it is expected that he will win his way to tight classes. Blaydon is one of the many good winners sired by Jack Potts, his dam Ablaze being by Pedro Pronto from Ella Wood, the dam of Harbour Light, Real Light (4min 28 3-ssec), Delco and Portlight.
Slow Recovery G. McKendry, who received a broken arm when Marsceres fell on the second day of the Addington meeting last month, is making a good but slow recovery from his accident. The bone
was broken in two places, however, and it will be some time before he is able to resume his calling, but it is anticipated that if he maintains his'present progress he will be fit to drive again at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November.
Classic Winner Gallant Chief, who won the Wellington Stakes at Hutt Park on Saturday, is the first of Gallant Knight’s stock to race. Racing in the colours of his breeder, Mr J. R. McKenzie, Gallant Chief has performed very solidly in the racing he has done and in four starts he has now won once and been twice placed and in his only other appearance he fell. Gallant Chief has been overshaded by his stablemate, Highland Scott, who, however, does not appear to be sound. In a season which is not strong in three-year-olds, especially with the Sapling Stakes winner, Sir Julien, not engaged in the more important classics, Gallant Chief will now come into strong favour for the New Zealand Derby to be run at Addington in November. Gallant Knight has proved himself a game and reliable pacer and Gallant Chief has acquired many of his characteristics. Takachance, the dam of Gallant Chief, was imported by Mr McKenzie some time back but an injury prevented her from racing. She is a member of a great winning family in America, being sired by the renowned Scotland, a member of the Peter the Great line, whose only representative in New Zealand is U Scott, now retired.
Two-Minute Pacer The first two-minute mile recorded in a race in America this year was accomplished by Blackstone, a three-year-old unhoppled pacer by Volomite from Margar.et Spangler, a 2min sec pacing daughter of the trotter Guy Axworthy. Blackstone won the three heats of the American Stake, of 2517 dollars, in 2min 4sec, 2min and 2min ssec. The racing was on the Old Orchard “kite” mile track during July, and in winning the trotting division of the American Stake Peter Astra, by Peter Volo, did* the three heats in 2min 3jjsec, 2min 3Jsec, and 2min 2Jsec. Blackstone has a lull-sister in New Zealand and is also fully related to Chief Counsel, who, as a thre-year-old last season, created history by pacing his mile in Jmin 57fsec. Spangled Maiden, the New Zealand filly, was purchased for Mr J. R. by auction at the Walnut Hall auction a year ago, and to American time is a two-year-old. She cost 5500 dollars at the sale, and is by Volomite by Peter Volo from Cita Frisco. TTie dam of Blackstone and Spangled Maiden is Margaret Spangler by Guy Axworthy, 2min Bfsec.
The Derby Strain The Waikato sportsman, Mr Wilfred Johnstone, on his recent visit to Australia purchased Play Globe, an aged son of Globe Derby, who, as a sire, was responsible for practically all the champions of recent years in the Commonwealth. There has been no strain to equal the “Derby” strain, but, unfortunately, Globe Derby died some time back. However, he left sons to carry on, and among the number are Walla Walla, Van Derby, Logan: Derby and Robert Derby. In securing Play Globe, Mr Johnstone will introduce a new strain into his stock at Tamahere, where he has a number of good and proved mares. Play-Globe did very little racing.. He. was put ■to the stud early, and has sired many winners, including Globe Pick who has a mile record of 2min llsec, and a mile and a-half record of 3min 21sec; Western,; b Globe; with a Tasmanian, record-of 2min llsec, and Pay Hubn,' with records of; 2mm: lljsec and 3min 21sec. Mr Johnstone also purchased i’a : two-year-old colt by Robert Derby; He is a beautiful juvenile in conformation, and should wprthily uphold the “Derby” tradition when the time comes for him to race.
