WELLINGTON, September 25.

Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, issued by the meteorological office, Wellington:— Light to fresh winds, between northwest and south-west; a few showers probable, but weather mainly fair. Temperatures moderate. Seas moderate. ’

Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather cloudy and unsettled over the North Island with further rain between east cape and Cape Palliser; conditions gradually improving, however, from the north and west; fair to fine at first over the South Island, but becoming unsettled in the far south tomorrow. Temperatures moderate to

cc' 1 , with a possibility of some frosts tonight in the South Island. General Situation.—A depression centred north of Auckland is moving slowly eastward; anti-cyclones centred over eastern Australia and to the south-east of New Zealand respectively are losing intensity.

Winds.—Moderate to strong southeasterly to southerly over the North Island and north-westerly in the far South; elsewhere light to fresh northeasterly to northerly; a change to southwesterly probable in the south tomorrow, however. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough north of Far,ewell Spit and Castle Point, elsewhere slight or moderate, but later rising about Foveaux Strait. Eastern Tasman Sea, fresh southerly winds and rather rough seas in the northern portion and light to moderate but freshening westerly winds and moderate seas in the southern portion.

A strong south-westerly wind blew in Invercargill yesterday and was followed by several showers of rain early in the evening. Conditions were cold throughout the day. At one o’clock this morning the weather was overcast and cold with light rain falling.
