WAIRIO

TENNIS CLUB When the Wairio Tennis Club held its annual meeting, Mr J. B. Cutt (president) presided over a fair attendance of 'members. , The report stated that the club generally had had a favourable season, although it did not manage' to win the competition. Play had been of a good standard, although there had been difficulty in completing competition games. The club’s team, the chairman said, had fulfilled the whole of its fixtures, but because of circumstances, some of the other teams had not returned visits. The club was in a good financial position and the year’s workings showed a

credit of £5/13/1. This must be considered satisfactory. During the season a friendly game nad been played with a team from Scotts Gap and an enjoyable afternoon had been spent. The courts were in good order and although certain improvements were necessary they would be amply covered by the balance. Thanks were due to all who helped in any way, especially the women who had given excellent service with the catering. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: Patron, Mr J A. Steans; president, Mr J. B Cutt (reelected); secretary, Miss G. Collie (reelected); vice-presidents, Miss M. Steans, Mrs W. E. Deady and Messrs H. Barnfield and C. H. Withers; committee, Mrs H. Barnfield, Messrs A. W. Keen, A. W. Sherman, W. E. Deady and the vice-presidents, club captain and selector, Mr H. Barnfield; delegates to Western District Sub-Association, Messrs J. B. Cutt and H. Barofield. It was decided not to enter a team in the Western District competitions. Opening day was fixed fdr October 7, when a series of friendly games will be j played. ‘ EUCHRE The weekly euchre evenings run by the Wairio branch of the Labour Party were again well attended.
