MAKAREWA CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The president, Mr D. F. Leckie, presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Makarewa Tennis Club. In moving the adoption of the report Mr Leckie referred to the sound position of the club and to the successful past season. The balance-sheet, he said, showed a credit balance of £6/13/7. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs E. Callaghan in their recent bereavement. Mention was made of the great amount of work which they had done for the club in its early stages. The election of officers results as follows:—Patrons, Mr J. Hargest, M.P., and the Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C.; president, Mr D. F. Leckie; vice-presi-dents, Mrs E. Mortimer and Messrs E. Mclvor, E. McClean, J. Watt, F. Clark, A. Smith, A. G. Weavers, M. Wright, F. F. Norman, W. Davidson, W. Mortimer and A. George; joint secretaries, Messrs K. F. Fallow and A. McClean; auditor, Mr E. Mclvor; club ’ captains, Mr K. Fallow and Miss K. McClean; executive committee, Misses B. McCall, V. Mortimer, K. McClean, and R. Norman, Messrs J. McClean, E. Mclvor, W. Wright, B. McDougall, D. Leckie, jun., and J. M. Dickson; selectors and ranking committee, Mrs Mortimer, Messrs E. Mclvor and J. McClean; delegate to Southland Association, Mr A. A. McClean; ladder secretaries, Miss B. McCall, and Mr B. McDougall.

The club championships were left in the hands of the club captains, selectors and ranking committee. It was decided to encourage junior players by admitting them to junior championship for a subscription of 2/6. Subscriptions were fixed at 13/6 for men and 11/- for women with a rebate if paid by December 1, 1939. Opening day was fixed for October 7. The report stated that the club had had a most successful season. The credit balance at the beginning of the year was £2/19/9 and at the end of the year £6/13/7, which was quite a satisfactory position, although no extraordinary expenditure was incurred during the year. The equipment was in good order for the beginning of the new season. The committee wished to I thank all those who so helped in the | construction of the break-winds which 1 greatly improved the appearance of the courts and prompted better playing conditions. The membership stood at 10 women and 12 men, while 4 juniors were financial members. The committee wished to place on record the services of Miss Adele Hermann (now Mrs C. Milne), who was a member of the first team for many years. She carried best wishes in her new sphere. The congratulations of the club were offered to J. E. McClean, top man, who was again winner of the Southland junior singles championship. The club also congratulated Miss D. Mortimer and H. MacDougall who were chosen for the second grade representatve basketball team, and also those Makarewa school children who were successful at the Southland primary tennis championships. Two teams, senior B and C grade, competed in the competitions this year and performed very creditably. The senior B team was well up in its grade, being defeated twice by narrow margins. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING INVERCARGILL CLUB’S SHOOT The tenth and eleventh rounds of the Invercargill Miniature Rifle Club’s championships were fired at the weekly shoot. The scoring was very good, B. Darroch and A. Pomeroy both scoring two possibles. Next Thursday the season will conclude with the final rounds of the club championships. Scores off the rifle were: .B. Darroch 80 (first shoot), 80 (second shoot); A. Pomeroy 80, 80; J. Clark 79, 79; G. Cheyne 78, 78, A. Blee 78, 77; G. Robertson 77, 78; J. L. Birss 77, 78; J. Archer 77, 78; J. Kelty 77, 79; G.
