Wellington Trotting Meeting FAVOURITES DO NOT FARE WELL (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 23. The Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting today was greeted with beautifully fine weather after light rain the previous day. The track was in good order but not fast. Favourites fared not too well. The Wellington Stakes revealed a good colt in Gallant Chief, who won with something in reserve. The totalizator figures for the day were £28,925, compared with £29,050 for the corresponding meeting last year, a decrease of £125. Results were:— NAI NAI HANDICAP, £2OO. Trotters. One mile and a-half. 2-2 ALLWORTHY, It (R. Young) 1 8-7 BIWORTHY, 12yds (S. A. Eagan) 2 4-4 CHUDIC, 12yds (C. Moran) 3 (Winner trained by J. Young, Christchurch) Also started: 7-8 Sphinx It, 9-9 Glorietta 12yds, 3-3 Violet Wrack 12yds, 5-6 Bill Grattan 24yds, 1-1 Shadeland 24yds, 6-5 Franz Derby 96yds. Won by two lengths, four lengths between second and third. Violet Wrack was fourth. Times: 3.31 1-5, 3.32, 3.33. At the end of a furlong Allworthy went to the front and was not troubled to win comfortably. A head separated Chudic and Violet Wrack for third. SHARPE HANDICAP, £2OO. One mile and a-quarter. 4- MACKSCOT, It (M. Holmes) 1 8-10 EXCELL, It (A. W. Broughton) 2 6-6 SCOTTIE DIRECT, It (C. Moran) 3 (Winner trained by M. Holmes, Christchurch) Also started: 13-13 Freeworthy It, 2-3 Inquisition It, 5-5 Neon Oro It, 3-4 Kokua It, 9-8 Brungasta It, 10-11 Don Walla It, 1-1 Wishful It, 11-9 First Shake 12yds, 7-7 Max Havoc 12yds, 12-12 Rollalong 8.4. Mackscot was in the lead from start to finish and held off a strong challenge from Excell, Scottie Direct and Neon Oro. Wishful accompanied the winner to the straight but failed to come on. SIR THOMAS WILFORD MEMORIAL HANDICAP, £3OO. One mile and a-half. 2-3 GREAT JEWEL, It (R. B. Berrv) 1 1- WINDSOR LASS, 12yds (J. B. Pringle) 2 5- MARLENE, 12yds (C. S. Donald) 3 (Winner trained by R. B. Berry, Christchurch) Also started: 6-6 Red Pigeon It, 3-2 Great Divide 12yds, 4-4 Bill B 12yds. Won by three lengths, one length between second and third. Red Pigeon was fourth. Times: 3.23 4-5, 3.24, 3.24 1-5. Great Jewel began smartly and inside the furlong went to the lead, which he maintained to the judge. Windsor Lass made a move from the back of the field rounding the bend into the straight the last time and came through well to gain second place from Marlene. WELLINGTON STAKES, £6OO. For three-year-olds. One mile and ahalf. 2- GALLANT CHIEF (J. Bryce, jun.) 1 1-1 THREE TENS (A. W. Broughton) 2 3- IMPERIAL JADE (M. Holmes) 3 (Winner trained by F. C. Dunlevey, Christchurch) Also started: 4-4 Josette, 5-5 Durability, 6-6 Shady Glen, 7-7 Latest Edition. Won by one length and a-half, four lengths between second and third. Latest Edition was fourth. Times: 3.29 1-5, 3.30, 3.30 3-5.

The field got away fairly well, Three Tens and Latest Edition being slowest off the mark, but they quickly went to the front and led the first time round. Gallant Chief was being patiently driven handy to the leaders in fourth position, and down the back made up ground. He challenged the leaders in the straight and, hard driven, won well. Three Tens beat Latest Edition well for second place with Imperial Jade well up fourth, after having every chance. Gallant Chief proved himself to be a class colt, who should go on. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, £225. Trotters. Two miles. 4- VIOLET WRACK 12yds (A. Butterfield) 1 3-2 SHADELAND 36yds (D. Bennett) 2 2- ALLWORTHY 36yds (R. Young) 3 I (Winner trained by A. Butterfield, I Christchurch) Also started: 8-7 Sphinx It, 7-8 Glorietta 12yds, 5-4 Biworthy 12yds, 1-1 Chudic 12yds, 6-6 Bill Grattan 36yds. Won by half a length, three lengths between second and third. Biworthy was fourth. Times: 4.44 4-5, 4.43 1-5, 4.44 1Trotting in her best style, Violet Wrack stayed on well to win. Shadeland went with her to the last furlong but could not stay on. Allworthy again trotted a good race. HUTT PARK TRIAL HANDICAP, £2OO. One mile and a-half. 5- MONGOLIAN 84yd (L. F. Berkett) 1 3- MARATUA It (A. W. Broughton) 2 4- WISHFUL It (M. Stewart) 3 (Winner trained by L. F. Berkett, Richmond) Also started: 8-8 Plate Armour It, 1-1 Inquisition It, 2-2 Neon Oro It, 6-6 First Shake 12yds, 7-7 Max Havoc 12yds. , Won by three lengths, four lengths between second and third. First Shake was fourth. Times: 3.24 1-5, 3.32, 3.33 4-5. Mongolian came fiom a long way back to win going away. Maratua had every chance and Wishful came up fast to beat First Shake for third. RAILWAY HANDICAP, £250. One mile and a-half. 2- BLAYDON It (C. S. Donald) 1 1-1 JOSEDALE GRATTAN It (F. J. Smith) 2 4-5 HUGUFNOT It (R. B. Berry) 3 (Winner trained by C. S. After leading for three-quarters .of the journey Rollalong gave way to Blaydon, Josedale Grattan and Huguenot. As the straight was reached Blaydon went on to beat Josedale Grattan comfortably. Huguenot beat Becky Direct for third by haL a head.

Won by a length, a length between second and third. Great Jewel was fourth. Time, 2.48 3-5. Marlene led all the way and withstood a strong challenge from Nervie’s Last to win decisively. Horsepower and Great Jewel both came home well but Lightning Lady and Great Divide had every chance. ARANUI’S SUCCESS AT MENTONE (Received September 24, 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, September 23.
