RIVERTON TRACK WORK
Interest In Classic Candidates
NIGGER BOY AND DARK FLIGHT
BAY DUKE SPRINTING IN GOOD STYLE
With the approach of the Dunedin spring meeting training work at Riverton has been much brighter during the last week and on Saturday morning several interesting trials were carried out on the No. 1 grass, which provided good going. The majority of horses at Riverton are well forward and with classic candidates such as Nigger Boy, Dark Flight and Gold Flight in work, more than ordinary interest has been shown in their progress. About 20 horses are working at the seaside centre at the present time but this number will be added to before long.
Irish Fling ran half a mile on her, own in 52sec, and did it comfortably all the way. The Woodend mare has grown into a solid type of four-year-old and is well advanced for this stage of her preparation. As a three-year-old last season she showed great promise and she should be an even better mare this season.
Peony Rose jumped off from the mile post, completing the circuit in lmin 59sec, the last half in 54sec. It was the only over the last three furlongs that she was hurried along and she finished on in great style. Peony Rose
is an everyday customer, both on the tracks and in her races, and she should again be a force to be reckoned with in middle-distance events this term. Kippen, who looks big and well, was permitted to run an easy half, and he was anxious to do better. SET SAIL FILLY The Iliad—Set Sail three-year-old filly and Ratamai sprinted half a mile in 52sec, the first two in 26sec. The pair jumped away from a barrier start and the Iliad filly shaded her mate at the finish. She has furnished into a likely type of three-year-old and like other members of this family has plenty of ability. Ratamai has not grown much. Dark Flight galloped an easy six furlongs, the last five in lmin 7sec, and the last three in 40sec. It was an easy task for the Nigger Minstrel three-year-old and he looks a picture. He has recovered from the cold which was coming on him at the Otago Hunt meeting but the two races he had at Wingatui appeared to set him back for a while. He will not contest the Dunedin Guineas but he will carry out his engagement in the hack sprint. NIGGER BOY’S TASK Some interest was shown in a bout between Nigger Boy and Bay Duke. Nigger Boy jumped off at the seven-fur-long post arid was joined by Bay Duke at the five. The seven was run in lmin 35sec, the last five in lmin 7sec and the last half in 54sec. Bay Duke was held back to Nigger Boy, who was being hard ridden, at the finish. Nigger Boy is a lazy track worker while he has also been troubled by a cold. When he is right he should not have any trouble in running out a mile as his task with Bay Duke, a brilliant sprinter at his best, was no easy one. Bay Duke put all his old dash into his work, and although he has not done a great amount of fast work, he accomplished this task in excellent style. A five-year-old gelding by Gold Street (a half-brother to Fleet Street and Wall Street) from Ramanuwhiri (the dam of Ramana) sprinted half a mile on his own ins4sec. . Boaform and a two-year-old gelding by Philamor from Paigle jumped away from a barrier start and covered half a mile in 54sec, the first two in 26sec. The two-year-old jumped out as well as his mate and they were together all the way, although Boaform shaded him at the finish. The last-named looks really well while the Philamor youngster, who ranks as a half-brother to Peony Rose, is an attractive galloper. He is well put together but will not be produced until later on. Gold Flight sprinted three furlongs in 41sec. She is none the worse for the racing she has had and although she is troubled by a cold at the present time she should, be in good order to contest the McLean Stakes. Bow Street was let off with easy work but he appeared very cramped. Fleet Street was also at the tracks but he has not done as well as expected and will probably be put aside a couple of months. The jumper, Dazzling Raid was out 4’jlpg light work. He does not appear iy be showing any signs of the unftoundness which has always troubled fam.
