UNDAUNTED SPIRIT OF BRITISH SEAMEN

Among the stories illustrating _ the quiet courage and indomitable spirit of British merchant seamen are the remarks of a British Missions to Seamen Chaplain who writes: "So far from submarine warfare deterring our seamen from going to sea it has had the opposite effect. Their one desire when they get ashore after being torpedoed is to get another ship. Their spirit is the same as in 1914-18.” CHIEF OF CONCENTRATION CAMP SHOT DEAD (Received September 24, 10.30 p.m.) PARIS, September 23. A colonel commanding the concentration camp at Gratz, Austria, was shot dead by a veteran Nazi. The radio reports that the German authorities have proclaimed martial law at Zlin. NEW ZEALANDER IN CHARGE AT SALISBURY The Ministry of Information in a communique announces that Major-General B. C. Freyberg, has been appointed to command the Salisbury Plain area.
