17 ENLISTMENTS ON SATURDAY TOTAL FOR SOUTHLAND NOW 587 Seventeen more recruits for the special military force for service within New Zealand or overseas enlisted at the Invercargill defence headquarters on Saturday, bringing the total number of enlistments in Southland up to 587. Ten of those who enrolled were residents of Invercargill and the others were from the country districts. CAPTAIN COCKERELL BIDDEN FAREWELL SPECIAL APPOINTMENT AT TRENTHAM On Saturday morning members of the executive of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association met in the Drill Hall to bid farewell to Captain A. R. Cockerell, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., formerly adjutant to the Southland Regiment and Area Officer for No. 12 Area, who has left to take up a special appointment at Trentham.
Major H. C. MacKenzie, president of the association, who is replacing Captain Cockerell, spoke of the efficiency with which Captain Cockerell carried out all his duties and said he hoped his appointment would mean , welldeserved promotion. When his present task was finished it was their hope that Captain Cockerell would return to Invercargill. Others who ’spoke were Messrs H. Crawford, J. S.- Filippini, W. F. H. Stone and P. L. Hodge.
Captain Cockerell said he was sorry to be leaving and referred to the valuable assistance given by .the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
