MORE PAY FOR NAVAL RATINGS
SUPERANNUATION ■ SCHEME TO BE INTRODUCED
(United Press Association)
WELLINGTON, September 23.
Arising from the report of the committee which investigated naval pay and allowances, the Government has approved an increased scale of pay, the increases briefly being 9d a day for able seamen, lOd for leading ratings and 1/4 a day for petty officer ratings, with corresponding increases in the rates of progressive pay. To relate the pay of warrant officers to the increased rates for ratings the present rates of there officers on promotion will be increased by 1/6 a day, the three-year rate by 1/3 a day, the six-year rate by 1/- a day and the nineyear rate by 9d a day. A superannuation scheme is being introduced, intended to supersede the system of deferred pay, for all ratings who join on or after January 1940 and if they so desire the men now serving can be included in the scheme in which case they would draw the 1940 scale of pay. Ratings coming under this 1940 scale will contribute five per cent, of their pay to the fund. No alteration will be made to the present regulations for deferred pay for men now serving unless they elect to come under the new scheme. The Government is considering more recommendations about social amenities and other questions.
