Mrs J. F. Raines will leave tomorrow for Dunedin, where she will spend a few days. Mr and Mrs L. G. Lilly have returned to New Zealand after a visit to Britain.

Miss Hume, Herbert street, will return tomorrow from a short visit to Queenstown. Mrs G. H. Cossins, Timaru, arrives this week to visit her daughter Mrs P. W. Gresson, Albert street. Miss Enid Hoffman, of Dunedin, has returned home, after being the guest of Miss Glori Bull, Yarrow street.

Mrs W. L. McGoldrick, Gore, was the guests of Mrs T. McGoldrick, 70 Jackson street, for the week-end.

Mi- and Mrs R. T. Stewart, who formerly lived in Otautau, will take up residence in Park street, Winton, today. The Christchurch Travel Club will entertain Miss Myra Anderson, Crinan street, for the day l when she passes through to Wellington this week to take up nursing at the Lewisham Hospital. Miss D. J. Buchanan, formerly tutor sister at the Waikato Hospital, who has been appointed'matron of the Southland Hospital, will arrive in Invercargill this week and take up her new position on October 1.

“Both in England and in New Zealand many of the best women teachers are attracted to infant school work,” said Dr H. E. Field, speaking at a meeting of the Parents’ Union in Christchurch. “I think this is a very good thing, because the period from four to seven years is a crucial stage in a child’s life when he needs very careful handling.”

RIMU Mrs H. Adkins, Dunedin, has returned after spending the week-end with her aunt, Mrs W. Emerson. She was accompanied by Miss L. Emerson. Mrs Campbell, Tuatapere, has been staying with Mrs Broomhall. Mrs G. McLellan has returned home after spending a holiday with her daughter Mrs A. Munro, Margaret street, Invercargill.

GIFT AFTERNOON AT RIMU

BRIDE-ELECT HONOURED On Thursday afternoon the women of Rimu district entertained Miss Jessie Stewart at a gift afternoon in the hall in honour of her approaching marriage. The afternoon was spent in games and competitions. Songs were sung by Mrs G. Davidson. Winners of the various competitions were Mrs Little, Mrs W. Stewart, Miss O. Davidson and Miss M. Broomhall. Mrs M. Davidson presented the guest

with a spray, wishing her every happiness in the future. The gifts on view were presented by Mrs Dawson, who wished Miss Stewart a very long and happy life. Mesdames C. Bulling and Mrs Emerson also spoke. Miss Stewart replied. Those present were Mesdames W. Stewart, H. Stewart, J. Shand, W. Curry, S. Allott, J. Smail, J. Little, L. Keach, H. P. Bulling, A. OBITUARY

MRS ELIZABETH WINTER The death occurred at Lady Barkly i on Saturday morning of Mrs Elizabeth Winter, widow of Mr Francis Winter who was killed in a coal mine accident at Nightcaps in 1900. Born at Tairei 76 years ago Mrs Winter was a daughter of the late Mr Hugh Beggs, of Belmont. Mrs Winter received her education at the Tairei and Glenkenich (near Tuatapere) schools and was one of the first-day pupils at the latter school. She married at Tuatapere where the couple took up farming later moving to Nightcaps where Mr Winter was employed in the coal mines. After the death of her husband Mrs Winter lived in Invercargill for more than 30 years

after which she moved to Kauana and then to Lady Barkly where she resided for the past few months. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs A. D. Campbell and Mrs J. M. Meffin, both of Invercargill, and three sons, Messrs R. G. Winter and H. L. Winter, of Invercargill, and Mr F. S. Winter, of Lady Barkly, and also eight grandchildren.
