BETWEEN OURSELVES

Cousin Agnes Clark: Sorry, but the piece of paper on which you wrote your'pen-name has been mislaid. However, if you write next week, you will see it ■in Between Ourselves then. Did the badge arrive safely? Cousin Ellen Knowler: If you read my letter on the front page this week you will ’understand why I cannot procure a pen-friend just now. I hope to have an address for you soon, though. Cousin Coronation Lassie: Do you like arithmetic? I hope you had all the sums correct yesterday. Percy Pencil did not like your entry this week. He thought it was rather untidy. Cousin Sweet Briar: My cousins are growing up too quickly. Has your first evening dress been finished? What colour is it? You should have come to see me when you were in town on Friday. Cousin Flower-o’-the-Lily: You would be pleased to have your mother and father at home again. Have the history and geography papers been returned yet?

Cousin Peter the Pirate: Will you have as many goslings and chickens this year as you did last spring? What do you mean to,do with the eggs you have collected? Cousin Black Beard: Did you collect the trees from the bush to plant in the school garden? It must be looking pretty at present with all the spring flowers coming out. Cousin Bluebird: Are you joining the clan, too? There are some boy members, although the captain and secretary are girls. You did quite well in the music examinations. Congratulations. Cousin Doris Barrett: Have you a pen-name for Between Ourselves? I think you used one last time you wrote. The results of the Art Club competition will be in the Chronicle next week.

Cousin Pat Henderson: I am very sorry to hear about your sister. I hope that her recovery will be swift, and that she will soon be -about again. Your secretary will quite understand your absence from the bazaar. Thank you for the offer of books, they will be very acceptable.

Cousin Dave from Snake Gully: Have you been flying your kite this week? I have seen many boys in town flying them in empty, sections. Are you back at school again?

• Cousin Buttercup Girl: It will be some time before I will be able to obtain more pen-friends, but later if you send another stamped, addressed envelope, I will send it away for you.

Cousin Queenie’s Mistress: An answer to your letter was posted during the week, so I hope it arrived safely. Have you thought of a

good name for the clan? I wish I could be at your first meeting.

Cousin Cherianthus: To form a clan there should be a group of Little Southlanders living in the one district or attending the same school. There is a clan for cousins who are scattered all over Southland. This is the Silver Fern Clan, and the secretary is Cousin Clara Lobb, Box 28, Edendale. Cousin Noelene: Your cousin did not come to see me that day, but perhaps she will climb Sally Staircase to see me next week. . Is she going to school with you? Cousin Sunbeams: Congratulations on passing the examinations. Did you receive marks, or were you just told that you had passed? The money you earn on Saturday nights will be very useful. Cousin Garden Boy: Each competition entry should be written on a different sheet of paper. Read the rules on the front page carefully, and then you will be careful not to break them. I am sorry I cannot send vou a library book, but if one of your family is in town he could choose one and take it out to you.

Cousin Judith Smith: The last Mind Sharpeners have been very easy, and all of my cousins should have full marks. Have you any puzzles to send that would be suitable for sharpeners? Cousin Cicely Barton: Yes, Susan Spring is really here at last, and we have had a number of sunny days. I suppose your next excitement will

be Labour week-end when the first of the summer visitors will arrive. Cousin Wong: There have not been many days suitable for tennis so far. Haye you played yet? Are you looking forward to the school operetta? I enjoyed the last one very much.

Cousin Ruth Fronde: Your letter arrived too late for the Chronicle last week, but the badge and enrolment card were sent immediately. Did they arrive safely? Do you know, any other Little Southlanders?

Cousin Sinbad the Sailor: There were a few flakes of snow in town last week, too. The spring flowers did not seem to mind and were nodding in the sun again the next day. Are you back at school after your illness? Cousin Nancy Lee: Are the dolls serving behind the stalls at your bazaar? What a good idea to have one of your own if you could not come to town. Is this the first time you have watched the tadpoles growing? HOSPITAL FUND Cousin Alison Harvey has given 3/6 to the Hospital Fund. Thank you, Cousin Alison.
