SIMPLE TREATMENT OF AILMENTS ADVICE BY SISTER EVANS Public preoccupation with health questions increases each year and there is a steadily advancing recognition that diet is one of the most important questions in assuring good health. Lectures on this problem attract considerable interest and during a recent visit to Invercargill, Sister Lillion Evans was heard by big audiences. Her book “The Gateway to Better Health” is now available and will be of considerable interest to those who heard her lectures and others to whom health is of prime importance. The value of the advice ol Sister Evans lies in its basic soundness and its simplicity. “Eat those foods which from experience you have found agree with you. Omit those foods which you have learned disagree. Eat one square meal of good, nourishing food every day, omitting one day in seven,” she says. She is not one of the modern advocates for only uncooked vegetables although she does not deny the value of vegetables in an uncooked form. She suggests the eating of both cooked and
uncooked foods, but in whatever form they are taken vegetables should be an important part of the diet. - Meat is not denied to those who follow her recommendations and one feature which appeals to a reader already suspicious of revolutionary diet recommendations is that Sister Evans finds nothing unwise in the eating of food prepared in such a manner that it is palatable according to the habit and taste of the eater. Claiming that it is easier to be well than ill, Sister Evans sets out what she conceives to be the simple laws of health. She traces the basic cause of such common ailments as rheumatism, arthritis, neuritis, digestive troubles, neurasthenia, constipation, and an important section deals with common colds. The diet recommended in each instance is painstakingly detailed and the reasons stated give these sections a logical clarity. The importance of vitamins is emphasized. Chapters on herbs and home treatments of common ailments, vitamins and salts are of absorbing interest and a generous section is devoted to general dietetic information and better health recipes which will appeal to housewives as offering suggestions for palatable and tasty meals. Sister Evans has written a book which will be appreciated by those who consider that diet plays an all-important part in maintaining good health. Her conclusions are reasonable and because they are not spectacular and revolutionary they will be accepted with less reserve than those of individuals who would change the mode of life and manners of eating which have been followed for many centuries without causing deterioration in the human race.
