CHARLES LAUGHTON’S NEW ROLE

ENGLISH STAR RETURNS TO HOLLYWOOD

Charles Laughton, who went to New York to launch his film “Jamaica Inn,” has gone on to Hollywood z to star in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Laughton is to take the part which Robert Morley thought would do him no good.

With a Bruno Frank scenario and William Dieterle (of the lives of Pasteur and Zola) as director, “The Hunchback” is planned as a £500,000 production. It will keep Laughton in Hollywood for two months. He will then return to London to play opposite Elsa Lanchester in “The Admirable Crichton.”

“Charles has long wanted to play in “The Hunchback,” said his wife. “For him it will be a holiday from big business—the big business of being a company director as well as an actor. It will be marvellous, for his career, but it will not mean so much in money. “By the time he has paid British and American taxes he will have exactly 18 per cent, of his salary to himself. People think Charles and I are very rich. Don’t you believe it.”
