PERMITS TO BUY PETROL

NOT ENOUGH DETAIL IN APPLICATIONS SUFFICIENT SUPPLIES FOR ESSENTIAL NEEDS Several objections to the amounts of motor spirits granted have been received by the Invercargill advisory committee for the control of motorspirit supplies and as more particulars of requirements have been received, increases over the amount originally granted, have been approved in some cases..

The district controller, the Chief Postmaster (Mr H. Miller) stated yesterday that while it was required that everyone should economize in the use of motor spirit and eliminate all unnecessary running, it was the desire of the Oil and Fuel Controller (Mr A. Tyndall) that sufficient supplies for the essential needs of industry in all forms be made available. Although no right of appeal existed, it was on this basis that objections were being considered, said Mr Miller. Any cases of hardship or difficulties peculiar to certain classes of business or industry were given full

consideration. In some cases, special circumstances necessitating the use of motor spirit were not stated in the applications at the time they were made. Mr Miller pointed out that many of the applications received by the committee did not state in sufficient detail the exact nature of the applicant’s requirements. If this were done he thought suitable arrangements for supplies could be made. Although it is not yet known definitely, it is thought likely that a person who has already obtained a licence for a specific monthly quantity of petrol for use in a private car which is used for commercial purposes, will also be able to procure for use in the same vehicle, the monthly quantity being allowed private-car owners from Friday. About 2900 applications for licences have now been received by the Invercargill committee.
