TWO GERMAN SEAMEN CHARGED
DESERTION FROM VESSEL AT NEW ZEALAND (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 12. Rudolph Schmuesser, aged 18, appeared on remand at the. Magistrate s Court charged with deserting from the German ship Dortmund. He had been working in the mine at Glen Afton and was arrested when he registered in Auckland as an alien. Yesterday ■ another German, P au | Breur, a seaman, aged 19, was arrested on a similar charge. He also had been working at Glen Afton. They appeared together today on the desertion charge, also a further charge of landing in New Zealand without permits. Schmuesser said he had consulted a solicitor and asked for a remand until counsel was available. The Magistrate (Mr F.’H. Levien) said nothing had yet been . decided concerning Germans residing in New Zealand, and the police suggested a remand until Tuesday. In granting a remand the Magistrate said there would be no further remands. Each was liable to 12 months’ imprisonment on one of the charges.
