The engagement is announced of Elsie Irene, only child of Mr and Mrs A. C. Fry, 117 Owen street, Wellington, to Robert George Douglas, younger son of the late Mr and Mrs J. Henry, of Invercargill. Mrs M. H. Mitchel, Leet street, who has been visiting Dunedin, 1 arrived home yesterday. In view of the international situation, the National Party’s ball, which was to have been held in St. Mary’s Hall tonight has been cancelled. Mr and Mrs E. F. Nichol, Christchurch, who have been the guests of their daughter Mrs W. E. Hazlett, Filleul street, returned north yesterday.
The Hons. Mary, Celia and Isobel Monckton, and the Hon. Simon Monck-ton-Arundell, children of the GovernorGeneral and Lady Galway, are the guests of Mrs W. R. Birch, Hapua, Masterton.
Mrs A. J. Benzie, who will represent the Christchurch Travel Club, at the official opening of the Southland Travel Club, to be held in H. and J. Smith’s Lounge this afternoon, arrived in Invercargill on Saturday night and is a guest at the Club Hotel. News comes from America of the extremely clever Rayner sisters, Joan and Betty, formerly of Dunedin, who have been a great success in every
country they have played in. Their bookings for the United States now run into March of next year, so it will be a long time till Australia and New Zealand see them again.
Mrs E. N. Greatorex, formerly Miss Betty Riddell, a New Zealander, who was born in Napier and educated at the Sacred Heart Convent, Timaru, has been selected by Associated Newspapers, Australia, to fly to London and return to Australia with the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Her husband is sporting editor of The Sunday Sun, Sydney.
Delegations to the Women’s World Peace Conference in Havana, Cuba, are expected to come from so wide an area that more time is required for organization and it has been decided to postpone the congress till January 1940. With more time available'it is now hoped to present to the congress a survey of the position and achievements of women throughout the world. This news has been received from the committee in London, which reports increasing widespread interest in the congress. Among the names of interest added to the list of sponsors are those of Mme Helene Vacaresco, Rumanian Permanent Delegate to the League of Nations, Mme Edouard Benes, and Signora Carlo Rosselli. The list of sponsors continues to grow, and women from 33 countries are supporting the congress. This wonderful reception has encouraged the London committee to expect an extremely successful and influential congress, with delegations representative of wide numbers of women.
