(Received August 17, 12.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 16. The Empire flying-boat Aotearoa took off from Hythe, Southampton, for Auckland at 4.43 a.m. (British summer time) today.
The flying-boat is due at Auckland about August 29.
The ground staff of the Imperial Airways depot at Southampton worked for 24 hours without a break preparing the Aotearoa for the take-off at dawn on the historic delivery flight to Auckland. A final trial flight yesterday proved that everything was ship-shape. The mechanics were employed well into the night on a last-minute check. The normal Empire air route will be followed. The Aotearoa was on the slips last night. Nearby is the famous Atlantic seaplane Mercury, and also the Aotearoa’s sister ships Caribou and Centaurus, which arrived this morning from Basra, and are deputizing in the mail service for the damaged flying-boat Australia.
