WASHINGTON, August 11.

The Navy Department has ordered work to be started on five Pacific island air bases, with the award of construction contracts totalling approximately £2,921,200. The bases are to be on Kaneohe Bay, Oaku Island, the fleet air base at Pearl Harbour, and Midway, Johnston and Palmyra islands. Congress authorized 12 bases last session, appropriating £13,000,000 for the purpose. The Navy’s announcement indicates that the new Pacific works will be accelerated beyond: the others.
