DIFFERENCE IN AWARDS
LAMB FOR ENGLISH MARKET JUDGING ON HOOKS IN N.Z. AND LONDON The difference in the awards on the hooks in New Zealand and in London for lambs most suitable for the English market was the subject of a letter from the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society received at a meeting yesterday of directors of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The letter stated that at a meeting of the committee of the society consideration was given to a letter from Mr H. R. Clark about the difference in the awards. Mr Clark wrote that the variations in placings were to him a subject for serious thought and they should try to get all the information and criticism possible so that there might be more uniformity in the judging. He was not criticizing the work of the judges and graders, but he wanted to know if they in New Zealand really knew what was the most suitable lamb for the English market. He suggested that the Meat Board be asked if it would be possible to obtain carcasses of lamb from London illustrating the requirements of the home market and to exhibit them at New Zealand shows as an object lesson for breeders of fat lambs. This might be done by way of a glass refrigerated unit. “VITAL IMPORTANCE” “My members consider that the improvement of our lambs for export is of vital importance and it was resolved to write to other Agricultural and Pastoral associations asking for support in our application to the Meat Board as it was considered that such an lesson would be most valuable,” concluded the letter. “We have never had that trouble m Southland,” remarked Mr W. Falconer. It was decided to write to the society to this effect.
