FRENCH PURCHASES OF WOOL
INCREASED DEMAND OF TRADE While French wool buyers, it is stated, threaten to boycott New Zealand wool unless the Government restrictions on imports from that country are removed before next wool-selling season it is interesting to note that France requires more wool nowadays than ever before, states The New Zealand Herald. In the first two months of this year France almost doubled her imports of South African wool, the total being 8540 tons This was equal to 18 per cent, of the gross French wool purchases during this period. The total value of French imports from the Union of South Africa was £741,000, compared with £531,000 last year. It is stated that the increasing demand for wool will be maintained because of the marked improvement in the French wool manufacturing industry.
There is a particular demand at the present time for crossbred wools for manufacture into military equipment, and it is reasonable to believe that France, in spite of the threat of boycott, would be unable to get suitable supplies from any other source outside New Zealand. South African wools are mostly Merino.
