REQUESTS MADE BY FRUIT GROWERS
PROBLEMS PLACED BEFORE MINISTERS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 10. Various problems affecting the fruit-growing industry in the Dominion were placed before the acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) and Cabinet Ministers today by a deputation from the New Zealand FruitGrowers’ Federation. The serious nature of some of the difficulties was emphasized and an assurance was given by Mr Fraser that they would receive early consideration. The deputation requested that the Government consider placing all primary producers of foodstuffs on the same basis as fishermen in the matter of the rebate on petrol; that it should institute an inquiry into transport costs in the Nelson province; that it should grant relief from the Social Security tax on foodstuffs produced by farmers on their farms; that it should abolish or alleviate heavy traffic fees on orchardists’ lorries, and that an inquiry should .be made into the rating system in Hawke’s Bay and an improvement be made in the telephone service in the relatively densely populated back-country areas.
