WORLD CONGRESS FOR PEACE

CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY WOMEN

ROLE IN ORGANIZATION AGAINST AGGRESSION

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 4. Problems of peace, modern warfare, democracy as a force for peace, the role of women in organization of peace and defence against aggression, and the task of women’s organizations are among the topics to be discussed at the women’s world congress for peace and liberty, to be held in Cuba next October. New Zealand’s two delegates will be Mrs Elizabeth Kelso, of Wellington, organizing secretary of Women’s Institutes, and Mrs Ray Wynn, of Auckland, secretary of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. The New Zealand committee for the congress, headed by Miss A. G. Kane (chairman) and Mrs J. G. McLean (secretary), with the assistance of the National Council of Women, is seeking the co-operation of women throughout New Zealand to decide on the Dominion’s attitude to the questions coming before the congress, and to finance the delegation. Speakers at the launching of the Wellington campaign emphasized the importance of unity among the women of all countries in working for peace and the defence of liberty. Among the sponsors of the congress are such well-known British names as Mrs Corbett Ashby, Dr Susan Isaacs, Dame Sybil Thorndike, Miss Ellen Wilkinson, M.P., and Mrs Charlotte Haldane. Europe, America and the Far East are represented.
