MANY CASES OF CAR CONVERSION
NEED FOR MOTORISTS TO LOCK VEHICLES
WELLINGTON. August 4. In a statement today, the Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) said that since the beginning of 1939, with a view to ascertaining detailed information about convictions for car conversions, monthly returns had been obtained from the Courts. These disclosed that the total of convictions recorded for the six months ended June 30 was 285, involving the conversion of 238 motor-vehicles. Of this number, 202 were' left unlocked. Of the 199 offenders who appeared before the Court, 114 were under the age of 21. The majority of the offences had occurred with unlocked cars and at night, said the Minister, and if people were to .take the simple precaution of locking their cars, particularly in the evenings, it would go a long way to reduce this type of offence.
