GUARANTEED PRICE
To The Editor Sir,—I cannot understand the attitude of the Farmers’ Union about the guaranteed price. If a vote was taken 75 per cent of the dairy farmers would vote at present for the guaranteed price. They are this year over £2,000,000 more than their produce would realize on the London market But the union will say that extra costs have absorbed this. It should not forget that the costs are fixed by the Arbitration Court, and that if the farmers had received £2,000,000 less the costs would be the same. The Labour Government has done more for the farmers in the last three years than previous Governments did in 20 years. It passed the Mortgagors’ Rehabilitation Act, the most unfair Act ever put on the Statute Book; it repudiated millions of pounds in mortgages and store keepers’ accounts and in some cases the life savings of old persons, and
told them that they could get the old age pension. The Government has set up another commission to inquire into the position of the sheep farmers and find another scapegoat. Inefficient farmers and business people should receive the inefficient same yard stick of justice.—Yours, etc., Me. August 2, 1939.
