MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING The Mataura Miniature Rifle Club has fired its third shoot for. the third monthly trophy. Twenty-eight members competed. Mrs Philip, with 78. off the rifle, secured the weekly handicap button. The highest score was registered by J. Taylor with 79 off the rifle. Results were: 1 Miss Richardson 66- R. Larking 71-4-75, J. Ramage 72-1-73, V. Dickie 75-4-79, W. Duthie 65-4-69. FAREWELL TO MR W. PATERSON
Representatives of the Mataura Returned Soldiers’ Association, the Mataura Kilties Band, the Mataura Bowling Club and many residents gathered in the Mataura Horticultural Hall to bid farewell to Mr W. Paterson, who is leaving Mataura to live in Christchurch. About 200 persons were present, including many from Gore and surrounding districts. Dancing and cards were held. A card competition between Block VH and Town was won by Block VII by 38 games to 21. The guest was played on the stage by Sergeant B. Ashly of the Mataura Pipe Band. Mr W. T. Parker, president of the band, expressed regret at the guest’s departure. Mr Paterson had always
taken a great interest in the Pipe Band, he said, and could be relied on to further its interests. He was sure that wherever Mr Paterson went, he would make many friends. Mr B. Sutherland, secretary of the band’s social committee, said that the success of the social committee was due in a great measure to the untiring efforts of Mr Paterson. He presented the guest with a chiming clock from the members of the band. Mr D. (Russell, president of the Mataura Bowling Club, paid tribute to Mr Paterson’s work both for the club and also for his ability as a bowler. Mr Paterson had been singles champion, a member of the champion pairs, and of the champion rinks. Mr A. N. Mac Gibbon, vice-president of the club, endorsed Mr Russell’s remarks. He presented Mr Paterson wit.i a solid leather bowling bag. Mr John Buchanan, Mr A. Marshall and Mr Cullen also spoke and gave presentations to Mr Paterson, Mr Paterson replied.
