CUP PRESENTED To create interest in the system of each player in a team playing two games with each of the opposing team, Mr B. Hollander has presented a cup for the player with the best average in the men’s A grade competition. The leading averages at present are:— S. Robson (Star) 7.6, D. Hamilton (W.S. and C.) 7.0, J. Ferguson (Star) 6.6, J. Corkery (St. Mary’s) 6.5, T. Breayley (Star) 6.4, B. Hollander (Meteor) 6.0, J. Loudon (Star) 5.8, J. Fraser (W.S. and Co.) 5.6, J. Marriott (St. Mary’s) 5.4. The percentages given are made up from eight games. WOMEN’S MATCHES In the main-A grade match, St. Mary’s defeated Rata without difficulty and, as a result, the former team is now assured of winning the competition. Miss M. McGrath and Miss J. Deegan both played well for the winner, and Mrs J. Colbert was in good form for Rata. The game between Star and W.S. and Co. resulted in a win for - Star, for whom Miss T. Ferns won all her games. Miss D. Stott played well for W.S. and Co., her best win being over Mrs S. Robson. This was a surprise as Mrs Robson had beaten her decisively in a ladder match. Mrs M. Blacke continues to show improvement and next year should win her place in the representative team. MEN’S MATCHES The chief A grade game was between St. Mary’s and W.S. and Co. and in a match that produced many surprises the former team won by 19 games to 17. The disappointment of the evening was the form of D. Hamilton (W.S. and Co.) who lost both his games to J. Corkery and one each to L. Dobbs and J. Marriott. Hamilton has been playing very well recently ana under the present match system had previously only lost one game, A. Harris (W.S. and Co.) seemed to have lost form, as .he won only one game. J. Fraser of the same team is improving and did well to take a game off Corkery, who is playing up to a high standard. . L Dobbs (St. Marys) was playing well, and M. O’Neill of the same team continues to show improvement. He should go far. in. the South Island junior championship. . J. Marriott (St. Marys) has a good average for the second round and it will be interesting to see his results against Star next week. The main B grade match was that between Union and . Beggs. Union, continuing to show very good form, won by the big margin of 29 games to 7. At its present rate of progress Union will be playing A grade next year, and it should do well. The outstanding player for the winning team was A. Roberts, who won his eight games and for Beggs, G. Tremlow was the best. St. Mary’s and Meteor had a close game, the St. Mary’s team winning by 20 to 16 after some very close matches. J. S. O’Brien did well to win eight games for the winning team, and H. Sayer played well tor Meteor. C. O’Toole has only taken up the game recently and is showing good promise. Southland Frozen Meat beat Rovers by 21 games to 15. B. Low did well to win seven games. C. Findlay also dip well for the winners. For Rovers, Mainwaring was the best player.
