BADMINTON

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH TONIGHT Tonight the first interprovincial badminton match between Otago and Southland will be played at Zealandia hall. Play will begin at 7.30 o’clock. The teams will consist of eight players (four men and four women) and eight singles, two men’s doubles, two women’s doubles and four mixed doubles will be played. Both teams are strong and a high standard of play should be seen. The teams are as follows: — OTAGO.—Men: W. Abbott, L. Swallow, J. Ferguson and G. Lemin. Women: Misses 0. Erridge, Angell, Backler and J. Leith. SOUTHLAND.—Men: R. McCallum, S. Glennie, J. Braithwaite and R. Thompson. Women: Mrs Salisbury, Misses K. Cutt, M. Woods and L. Fraser. NEW ZEALAND TEAM BEATS SOUTH AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE, August 4. Playing against South Australia, the New Zealand badminton team won by six rubbers to one. The visitors’ play was patchy and they appeared tired as

the result of strenuous travelling, but the manager, the Rev. H. W. Austin, expects an improvement. The smashing by the women players, particularly Miss Kerr, was a revelation to the South Australians who were outclassed.

Miss Kerr won 12-11, 11-3; Hawksworth won 15-9, 15-6; Pearce lost to Bicker 4-15, 15-4, 15-10; Hawksworth and Pearce won 15-13, 15-2; Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth won 15-2, 15-2; Miss Kerr and Pearce won 1510, 15-7; Mrs Hawksworth and Miss Kerr won 15-6, 15-12. In matches in Tasmania, New Zealand beat Bumie by eight rubbers to nil, lost to Northern Tasmania at Launceston by two rubbers to six, and beat Hobart by nine rubbers to seven. In a match in Melbourne New Zealand lost by three rubbers to four. WINTON BEATS RIMU IN C GRADE MATCH In a C grade badminton competition match played at Winton, Winton beat Rimu by nine games to three. Results, with Rimu names first, were:— Women’s Doubles.—Misses T. Stewart and Broomhall beat Misses J. McCrostie and M. Bennett, 15-4, 15-7; Misses D. Stewart and Shand lost to Miss I. Lindsay and Mrs Reynolds, 4-15, 5-15; Miss Emerson and Mrs Emerson lost to Miss Sheddan and Mrs Milne,

8-15, 9-15. Men’s Doubles.—Emerson and Broomhall lost to McKenzie and Wood, 8- 15-13, 10-15; Browning and J. Shand lost to Rawle and Scully, 12-15, 9- Munroe and C. Shand lost to Wilson and Pollock, 10-15, 8-15.

Mixed Doubles.—Emerson and Miss T. Stewart beat McKenzie and Miss McCrostie, 15-5, 13-15, 15-9; Broomhall arid Mrs Emerson lost to Wood and Miss Lindsay, 5-15, 13-15; Browning and Miss Broomhall lost to Rawle and Mrs Milne, 3-15, 7-15; J. Shand and Miss D. Stewart lost to Scully and Miss Bennett, 9-15, 6-15; Munroe and Miss Shand beat Pollock and Mrs Reynolds, 8-15, 15-10, 15-3; C. Shand and Miss Emerson lost to Wilson and Miss Sheddan, 14-15, 14-15. WRESTLING McCready beats martinez (United Press Association) , HAMILTON, August 4. In a bout of good, solid wrestling last night Earl McCready defeated Ignacio Martinez by the only fall of the match. The fall was secured in the sixth round, when McCready pinned his opponent following a crutch hold and a dump. McCready always had the bout in hand, but was extended a good deal.
