REASON SEEN FOR REVOLT
“IMPOSITION PLACED ON FARMERS”
MR HARGEST’S ATTACK ON TAXATION PROPOSALS
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 3.
“The farmers will revolt against the imposition placed upon them by this rapacious Government,” declared Mr J. Hargest (Nat., Awarua) in the House this afternoon in the financial debate when attacking the taxation proposals in the Budget. “Why should they not revolt? he asked. “They will do so in some way, either passively or actively, as a protest against the system that is going to crush them. If they sit down under the burden as they have in the past, what future is ahead of them or— The Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser): Is this an incitement to break the law? Mr Hargest: The Minister knows more about incitement than I do. Mr Fraser: If they try that game they will be treated exactly the same way as other Governments have treated others.
Mr Hargest described the Budget as one of discouragement. The country, he said, was alarmed and in a state of despair.
