PANDINE’S GOOD RECOVERY
Power Chief An Early Favourite - STRIP WILL BE IN DEMAND Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington winter meeting close at 5 p.m. today. At Wai mate Southland stables promise to. be stronfely represented at the winter meeting of the Walmate Hunt Club on July 15. Nominations close on Monday. Melbourne Trip Off As Padishah is to race at Trentham and has been nominated at the Grand National meeting, it seems that his proposed trip to Melbourne is off. A Weak Field Another failure had to be marked against Redolent at Ashburton on Saturday but the Panmure gelding is certain to come into his own before the winter season is much further advanced. He will meet a weak field of jumpers at Oamaru on Saturday. Not Impressive Ponty’s first appearance as a hurdler was not particularly impressive. He was inclined to pull in the early part of . the race, but retired at the end of a mile. ‘ Overdue Maroha’s victory at Ashburton was his first for fifteen months. His last previous win was gained at Motukarara and he had raced unsuccessfully 25 times in the interim. Sprint Prospect Strip’s failure in his only appearance at the Dunedin meeting will be overlooked when produced at Trentham next week. The Valkyrian gelding, who won in impressive style in his first appearance in open company at Riverton at Easter, is reported to have done well in his work since the Wingatui meeting. Disband’s Next Although he has won up to a mile Disband has always appealed as a better sprinter and his first appearance in open company at Oamaru on Saturday will be keenly followed. He will be opposed to two form horses in Lady Leigh and Petersham but he may prove too brilliant for them. Rider Injured When Redolent dislodged W. E. Shand in his preliminary at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday Shand suffered a bruised shoulder and another rider had to take the mount. Shand has been engaged to ride Gold Wren and Pandine at Trentham, and it is expected that he will be able to fulfil these engagements. A Temporary Check Treasurer was booked to race at Ashburton on Saturday, but . contracted slight lameness after working on Friday, and wqs not produced. It is hoped that the trouble will not prevent his making the trip to Trentham. New Rrecruif 1 Araboa, who is yet to race over hurdles, has been entered for the Grand National Hurdle race. As he is a great horse under winter conditions the going at Trentham next week should not trouble him and great interest will be shown in his first appearance as a hurdler. Araboa has quite a private reputation as a jumper and this is not surprising as the majority of Balboa’s stock are natural jumpers. Pandine’s Prc.’resa * When Pandine was injured the second day of the Dunedin meeting it was announced that he may have to be put aside for some time but he has not missed any work as a result of the injury. The Panmure gelding has done little fast work but he has done a lot of strong slow work and it is expected that he will be produced thoroughly fit on the second and third days at Trentham.
Uncle Jim’s Success Uncle Jim, who won the Dfomore Steeplechase at Ashburton, is now trained at Riccarton by J. B. Pearson. When in L. Pratt’s charge at Orari he won a Waimate .Hunt Cup. His dam, Fashion Queen, is one of the descendants of Fairy Benzie, an Australian mare whose family included Golden King, Mythology, Agnola, Fairy Fashion, Royal Fashion, Deportment and other winners on the flat and over jumps. “’ack To Form
In the autumn, Yours Truly struck very good form, winning three races, all beyond a mile, in succession. One oi these ents was the Champion Hack Cup at Trentham and he followed up these performances with a second to Dainty Sue in the Hawke’s Bay Cup and a third in the Easter Handicap at. Tauherenikau. He was then spelled but made a happy return to racing in the Taipua Handicap at Otaki, while he claims engagement also in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham. "ari/ Fa; rar"
Po.v - Chief, who ’./as narrowl- - by Survey in the Great Northern Steeplechase, is almost certain to be one of the arly favourites for the Wellington Steeplechase to be run next Tuesday. Power Chief now meets Survey on 61b better terms, as at Ellerslie he carried 9.6 including 31b overweight and he has now been laisod to 9.13, the same weight as Survoy. The slightly r’.ort- ■ • journev at Trentham and the flat going will probably sv’.t Power Chief better than the Ellerslie country. Power Chief is one of the best of the younger jumpers i: tl e Dominion and he will be given an excellent chance to atone for his narrow Auckland defeat.
Big Fields So heavy are the entries for the Wellington winter meeting that the club is faced -.vith the possibility of several divisions, but in the general interests it is hoped this will be avoided, states a Wellington writer. At the six-furlong barrier the course is 99 feet wide, and the safety number of starters is 29. In the Woburn Handicap, to be run on the opening day, there are 55 entries, just on double ■ the safety number. The course is 132 feet wide at the mile start, and 30 may line up at the one time, but there are 50 in the Whyte Handicap, the principal flat race on opening day. The hack mile has drawri 34, so a division should be avoided there. Much worse may be the Kir. Ora Handicap, the last race on the threeday programme, and the Winter Oats, also on the last day, as the entries in each of these events exceed 70. The mile and a-half start from which the Vittoria Hurdles field will be released, allows for 30 runners, and the race has attracted 42. A heavy acceptance will see the club facing a knotty problem.
