STORMS OFF COASTS OF AUSTRALIA

LINERS BADLY BUFFETED SYDNEY, June 27. Gales and stprms in the Tasman Sea have been encountered by the liner Awatea, which has been delayed about an hour, and by the Wanganella, which arrived about five hours late. A westerly gale was blowing off the coast all day. After the worst storm she has experienced in Australian waters since entering the trade in 1925, the liner Oronsay reached Fremantle with many visible signs of the severe buffeting received in the Gkeat Australian Bight, says a message from Fremantle. Her ventilators were stripped, her forecastle head railings twisted and her forepeak flooded, and parts of the crew’s quarters were awash.

The violent storms in the Tasman have caused grave fears for the safety of two men—V. Carmody, aged 38 years, and Edward Butler, aged 35 years—who left Newcastle in a launch for a morning’s fishing and have failed to return.
