CARGO HANDLED AT AUCKLAND

RECORD TOTAL FOR MAY (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 27. Exceeding by more than 50,000 tons the return for May of last year, the 229,499 tons of cargo handled at the port of Auckland last month constituted a record for any one month. The traffic manager (Mr W. R. Golden) reported to the Harbour Board that these figures were particularly interesting in view of the current discussions on import restrictions.

Compared with the corresponding month last year, the cargo landed from ships arriving from overseas as distinct from inward coastal cargoes represented an increase of 58.99 per cent. In May 1938, the inward overseas cargo amountled to 78.919 tons. Last month the total was 125,474 tons. On the other hand the cargo despatched overseas declined by 29.57 per cent, from 22,378 tons to 15,760 tons.
