DRUG SMUGGLERS
DANGEROUS WATERS. By John Bentley. Hutchinson & Co., Ltd., London, through Whitcombe & Tombs. Price 7/6.
Drug smuggling on the Riviera, international crooks, sinister Algerians and Egyptians and a fascinating adventuress are employed by John Bentley for his latest book, “Dangerous Waters.” The same ingredients have been used by countless other "thriller” writers, but seldom to such good effect. John Bentley has scored because, following the example of Peter Cheyney, he has introduced a “tough" detective, Dick Marlow. Although the international drug smugglers are successful with their smooth villainy for some 200 pages they are very much at a disadvantage with the detective. Fortified with brandy, Marlow harries them with a savage intensity, which is all the more discomfiting because he conforms to none of the rules set by the usual private detective of modern fiction. The story moves at a pace which will grip the attention of the reader from the moment Marlow takes his brandy and powerful fists into dangerous waters, until he emerges from them, with thirst and fists unimpaired.
