RISE IN PETROL TAX

Rumour Said To Be Current

FARMERS CONSIDER PROTEST

REPORT OF SPECULATION IN INVERCARGILL

“There is a rumour current at the present time that there is going to be an increase in the petrol tax and I think we should protest against it now before it comes,” said Mr J. Taylor at the meeting of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. “It is reported that one Invercargill man has invested quite a lot of money in petrol and is storing it in expectation of a rise.”

Mr J. H. Beck said that the executive had been asking that the user should pay for the roads. This policy might be in conflict with a protest against an increase in the petrol tax. The union had favoured the utilization of the petrol tax for the maintenance of roads and for the relief of rates. Mr A. G. Diack: Are you sure the tax is going to be used on the roads? If it is we might not wish to protest, but if there is a proposal to use the money for other purposes we would be justified in doing so. Mr John Johnston said they wanted to be certain that they would not be saddled with both heavier petrol tax and the present road rates. No action was taken.
