WHAT HAS HAPPENED

After the ship Sea Venture had battled gallantly against a terrific gale for three days she finally reached land —not Virginia, where the captain had hoped to land, but the islands of Bermuda. These islands were so beautiful, the birds and the fish they caught were so brightly coloured that many of the Sea Venture’s passengers feared that it was an enchanted island. For some time the women would not cook the food caught there, for they were afraid that it might be poisonous. Kit Carroll’s mother is not afraid to cook the fat turtle, the fish, and the birds, and so eventually they all sit down to a delicious supper—their first proper meal for three days. After eating all he can, Kit falls off to sleep.
