The engagement is announced of Isabella Lorraine, only daughter of Mrs McAlister and the late Mr James McAlister, Yarrow street, to Leslie Albert, only son of Mr and Mrs C. W. Nicholson, Bealey avenue, Christchurch. Miss Dorothy Chewings, Mossburn, is the' guest of Mrs R. R. Binney, Gala street. Mrs Noel McGregor, Mt. Linton, leaves on Monday for a brief visit to Dunedin. Mrs A. E. McDougall, Dunottar, Dunedin, who has been visiting Invercargill for a few days, returned home yesterday. The Hon. T. O’Byme and Mrs O’Byrne and Miss E. O’Byrne, Dalrymple street, will leave for Wellington today to be present at the opening of Parliament next week. Mr and Mrs R. Brash, Titiroa, are leaving by car to spend a holiday in Christchurch and a: accompanied by Mrs E. Brash, who will travel on to visit friends in the North Island. Mrs John Cameron, Mayoress of Bluff, gave a children’s party at her home Lee street, yesterday, in honour of the birthday of her grandson, Patrick Stanton, of West Plains. The dinner given for graduates of the University of New Zealand in London last month was a great success, with about 100 graduates attending. Professor J. B. Condliffe presided, and Mrs Condliffe and Mrs A. J. Harrop were hostesses. The High Commissioner was present. The toast of the University of New Zealand was given by Professor Sydney A, Smith (regius professor of forensic medicine at Edinburgh).
Mrs Adam Hamilton,; Duke street, leaves today for a short visit to the country. Mr and Mrs C. R. Story, Venlaw, are the guests of Mrs A. R. Dunlop, Ramrig street. Miss E. Hoyles, Herbert street, has joined the teaching staff of St. Anne’s Girls’ School, Takapuna, Auckland. Miss Mary Norris, Geraldine, has been the guest of Mrs R. P. Fish, Ramrig street, for a few days. Mrs M. A. Reidy, Lumsden, was hostess at her home on Wednesday evening in honour of Mrs G. O’Sullivan, who is leaving the district. A presentation was made to Mrs 0 Sullivan during the evening. Miss Catherine G. Smith, who has held the position of teacher in the Public Hospital, Kew, for the past 18 months, has received a similar appointment in Wellington and leaves for the north on July 1. Members of the play-reading circle of the Women’s Club visited Gore on Thursday evening when thev read the play “Busman’s Honeymoon’ by Dorothy Sayers and M. St. Clare Bryne. The club room at Gore was decorated with spring flowers and winter jas mine and Mrs G. H. Uttley was chairman.
