WAIAU ASSOCIATION TUATAPERE BEATS CLIFDEN Playing at Clifden in the Waiau Basketball Association competition, the Tuatapere A grade basketball team defeated Clifden by 19 goals to 15. The teams were:— Clifden.—N. Scott (captain), J. Robson, M. Fahey, E. O’Brien, E. Scott, M. Morrison, E. Bigley, A. Dixon, R. Rowley. . Tuatapere.—J. Morris (captain), J. Norman, O. Brumby, J. Dixon, U. McKercher, P. Mclntyre, B. McLeod, M. Densley and A. Dixon. The match was evenly contested, especially in the first half, the half-time score being 8 all. Tuatapere was slightly superior in the second half. S. Dixon, who shot 17 of Tuatapere’s 19 goals, played outstandingly. M. Densley played a sound game for Tuatapere as defence, combining well with B. McLeod and A. Stuck. The Clifden defence combined well and M. Morrison and E. O’Brien played well in the centre. N. Scott and M. Fahey were reliable as shoots for Clifden. Mr B. Lawson was the referee. B GRADE Playing at Clifden, Pukemaori beat Clifden by 21 goals to 10. The teams were:— Clifden.—T. Knowler (captain), E. Durham, N. Knowler, M. Langmuir, J. Findlay, H. Findlay, J. Pearce, L. Owens, B. Findlay. Pukemaori.—C. McAra (captain), J. Todd, I. Todd, D. Ferrar, N. Whyte, L. Marshall, A. Cavanagh, M. Froude, G. Ferrar. The Clifden team, which consists mostly of young players, displayed much improved form, but could not withstand the attacking power of the more experienced Pukemaori players. The passing of both teams was good and the Pukemaori forwards shot well. Mrs D. King was the referee. Playing at Orepuki, the Orepuki A team defeated the B team by 12 goals to six. The teams were:— A. D. Turnbull (captain), E. Johnston, R. Whelan, F. Ferguson, T. Goodsir, A. Brown, L. Herricks, J. Young. B. M. Hennessy (captain), D. Young, M. Buckingham, D. Whyte, A. Ferguson, B. Lee, C. Shepherd, R. Matheson. Each team was one player short.
The A team, which is entering A grade for the second round of the Waiau Basketball Association’s competition, was much superior in every third ana more accurate with its shooting. Mr F. H. Shepherd was the referee. REPRESENTATIVE PRACTICE The selectors, Miss E. Mcßherson and Mr E. King, gave most of the likely representative players a try-out at Tuatapere, and some promising young players were seen in action. RIVERTON AND DISTRICT SUB-ASSOCIATION POSITION OF TEAMS AT END OF FIRST ROUND The following table of points shows the position of the various teams at the end of the first round of the Riverton and District Basketball Sub-As-sociation’s competition:—
A meeting of the executive committee of the sub-association (delegates from the clubs) was held last week when the method of selecting the representative teams for the Country Day tournament at Invercargill was discussed. Eventually it was decided to hold a trial match in Riverton on Wednesday and to ask each club to nominate five players. From these players the selectors (Mesdames Whittle, J. E. Crengle and Nicol) will choose A and B teams to represent the Riverton SubAssociation at the Country Day tournament.
