WORK FOR MEN IN WINTER MONTHS

GOVERNMENT’S PLAN TO PROVIDE JOBS (United Press Association) HASTINGS, June 19. Absorption of unemployed labour during the winter months, a problem now of major importance, was discussed when the Minister of Labour (the Hon P. C. Webb) met representatives of local bodies from Napier and Hastings today. Co-operation with local bodies in eliminating unemployment was the Government’s aim, said the Minister. There was work available in State departments, work that was. of a good kind and would otherwise not be done for several years. The Minister emphasized that it was the Government’s wish to avoid taking married men from their homes in order to put them in work. It was better to put men on productive work than on the dole, he said. Requests for grants for labour to carry out various works by local bodies were well received by the Minister, and in the majority of cases they were agreed to. The Minister emphasized that now was the opportune time for farmers to improve their land by availing themselves of the surplus of labour offering. .
