TABLE TENNIS TEAM
To The Editor
Sir,—l noticed with consternation the Southland table tenrtis representative team to play Otago on Saturday last. We have in our ranks the South Island singles champion and runner-up to the Otago singles champion. That player has been placed only third in the team, although he has convincingly defeated the two men above him.
There seems to be something radically wrong in the selection of this team, as at least one member has definitely not been playing up to representative standard and therefore his inclusion is not justified. As an enthusiast who desires to see the game thrive in Invercargill, I cannot understand why two young players whose performances of late have stamped them as definite representative prospects have not been given a chance. We must remember that the players of the future are • the young players of today. The Table Tennis Association should wake up and remember that, unlike the brook, the old players cannot go on for ever.—Yours, CtC " STILL AN ENTHUSIAST. June 17, 1939. [This letter was referred to Mr S. Robson, one of the selectors, who said that the team was chosen on the current form of the players. Ladder ranking also was taken into consideration. L. Brown, the player referred to, was
beaten in a scratch tournament last week by J. Ferguson (No. 2 in the team), who in turn was beaten by Robson (No. I).]
