FARMERS’ RIFLE SHOOTING
COMPETITION WON BY THORNBURY TEAM MATCH IN INVERCARGILL YESTERDAY Eleven teams from different branches of the Farmers’ Union in Southland took part in a miniature rifle-shoot-ing competition in Smith’s Hall yesterday. The contest was arranged by the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union and was held under the auspices of the Southland Miniature Rifle Association. A challenge cup to be held for one year has been presented by H. and J. Smith Ltd., and yesterday it was won for the first year by the Thornbury team. Each member of the team will receive a medal.
The match was fired in two sections, and was won by the Thornbury team, with a score of 911.39 points. A medal for the highest individual scorer was won by J. H. A. Blatch (Mossbum) with a score of 155.6. J. McLean (Thornbury) was second with 154.9 and G. Buchanan (Thornbury) was third with 154.7. When the comparative inexperience of some of the farmers who took part is taken into consideration, the shooting was of a very good standard The scores for the first and second matches, and the total, are shown in the following table:—
The individual scores of the members of the Thornbury team are as follows: —J. McLean, 76.4, 78.5; C. McFarlane, 77.4, 75.4; H. Hayward, 77.2, 76.1; J. Ronald, 73.2, 76.4; G. Buchanan, 76.3, 78.4; T. Christie, 75.2, 74.4.
