WINTON HAS AN EASY WIN

LIMEHILLS-DIPTON DEFEATED WINNER’S LINE CROSSED FOR FIRST TIME In the Rugby football competition in the Central District on Saturday Winton had its line crossed for the first time this season. The match was against Limehills-Dipton played .at Winton, and Winton won by 30 points to six. Limehills-Dipton arrived with only 11 players and three other players were added to the team before it took the field. Winton was much the better team and won easily. The first half of the game was productive of some bright passing movements by the Winton backs and at half-time Winton led by 17 points to nil. The second half was mostly confined to loose forward play and was very ragged The Winton backs had many scoring opportunities, but the spoiling tactics ot the Limehills-Dipton backs resulted in the Winton wings being forced into touch on most occasions.

A feature of the game was the excellent performance of H. Hammond, who was playing first five-eighths for Limehills-Dipton. Hammond was fullback for Central on Country Day. On Saturday he beat the Winton inside backs time and again, but lacked support from his own backs. His handling was clever and his occasional kicks were well-directed. Shand at half-back also played well for Limehills-Dipton and combined well with Hammond. In the forwards, Kean, Reid and Overton were always prominent. M. McDowell was the pick of the Winton pack and McDougall played his usual good game. Sands showed a decided improvement in form and Kitto was always handy. Gibb on the wing showed some excellent bursts of speed and on nearly every occasion he received the ball he either scoied or was forced out near the corner flag. The day was cold and the ball was somewhat hard to handle.

The teams were: — LIMEHILLS-DIPTON.—G. Leith, G. Ward, A. Blackmun, G. Overton, J. Brooker, H. Hammond, D. Shand, Smith, W. Allan, L. Bell, W. Reid, N. Overton, W. Boyle, J. Kean. WINTON.—M. Forde, R. Gibb, W. Leonard, J. Wood, M. Thornbury, A. Marshall, C. McKenzie, K. Davis, N. Egerton, W. Carroll, J. Sands, F. Kitto, I. McDougall, M. McDowell, G. Gatley. Winton had the advantage of a slight wind in the first half and twice in the first minute Limehills-Dipton sought relief with force-downs. From a scrum on Limehills-Dipton’s line, Winton hooked and the half-back, McKenzie, went round the side to score. Marshall’s kick missed- Winton 3, Lime-hills-Dipton 0. Hammond gained ground with a good cut-in for Limehills-Dipton and kicked upfield, but Gibb returned the kick and found touch near half-way. The Winton backs begun an attractive passing bout, but the winger, Leonard, missed the final pass when in a handy position. Soon after the Winton backs again swept into action and the other winger, Gibb, dashed down the side-

line from halfway and scored wide out. Marshall’s kick failed. Winton 6. Lime-hills-Dipton 0. Hammond caught the opposition backs out of position with a neat cutin and raced about 25 yards upfield. With only the full-back to pass a try looked certain, but he was unsupported and was eventually tackled by Forde. Limehills-Dipton attacked, but Thornbury intercepted a pass and placed Winton in a dangerous position. A bright passing rush resulted from a scrum in front of the posts and Gibb scored wide out. Thornbury missed with the kick. Winton 9, LimehillsDipton 0. Gatley was next to score for Winton. Following a loose rush by the forwards in which McDowell was prominent Gatley dribbled over near the posts. Thornbury goaled. Winton 14, Lime-hills-Dipton 0. An excellent attempt at a penalty goal from near half-way was made by Shand, but the ball fell a little short. HAMMOND GAINS GROUND Limehills-Dipton worked into a good position and Hammond gained ground with a good kick into touch at the corner flag. Boyle received from the line-out and made a bold effort to cross, but was forced out. Several scrums and line-outs followed at the corner, but overkeenness on the part of the forwards brought relief for Winton by a penalty. Hammond took the catch and handed on to Shand. The last-named put in an excellent run before passing to G. Overton, who was forced out at the corner. The positions were soon reversed and following a bright passing rush by the Winton backs, Gibb was forced out at the corner. Thornbury scored soon after from another good effort by the Winton backs. Thombury’s kick missed and shortly after half-time sounded with the scores: Winton 17, LimehillsDipton 0. Thornbury was given a chance with a penalty at the start of the second half, but missed narrowly. Shand intercepted a pass and put in an excellent dash, but was held up by Gibb. Hammond placed his side in an attacking position with a good kick and a short time later Shand kicked a penalty from wide out. Winton 17, Lime-hills-Dipton 3. Winton had a territorial advantage during the next 10 minutes and following an exchange of kicks the backs swept into line and Leonard sped down the sideline. It looked a sure try, but G. Overton tackled him on the line. A scrum followed and the defending forwards broke away in a loose rush, headed by N. Overton, Reid and Kean. They carried play to Winton’s line and Overton dribbled over and forced. Shand missed with the kick. Winton 17, Lime-hills-Dipton 6. The Winton forwards retaliated immediately and Kitto was responsible for some good work. A scrum infringement at this stage allowed Marshall to goal from a difficult angle. Marshall had another shot from the same position a minute later, but missed. Wood and Gibb were seen in a fine passing bout and Gibb dived over, but was ruled out at the corner flag. Another passing bout by the Winton backs resulted in Wood scoring beside the posts. Marshall goaled. Winton 25. Limehills-Dipton 6. Limehills-Dipton rallied and Shand attempted a penalty from near halfway. but missed. Later Hammond attempted a field goal from well badbut missed with a good kick. Thorn-

bury kicked upfield and McDowell followed up well and dribbled to the line, where Kitto picked up and scored. Marshall goaled and the final score was: Winton 30, Limehills-Dipton 6. Mr J. Mitchell was referee. JUNIOR RESULTS Wrights Bush 19 beat Winton 0. Turi 11 beat Otahuti 6. Limehills 17 beat Central Star 6. NELSON DEFEATS MARLBOROUGH FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH OF SEASON (United Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 10. Preserving its line intact. Nelson beat Marlborough by 12 points to six in the season’s first representative Rugby match. The visitors’ superiority was clearly demonstrated by the fact that they scored four unconverted tries to two penalty goals. Marlborough took the lead early with two goals, kicked bv Jackson, the full-back, but Nelson drew equal before the interval, Karsten and Grindle scoring. ... Nelson maintained a territorial advantage almost throughout the second half, opening up the game and taking advantage of the weakness of the opposing backs. Tries were scored by Stallard and Lovell. Nelson showed better cohesion, commanding major possession from scrums and line-outs. Its backs showed excellent penetration and made good use of a plentiful supply of ball. The redeeming feature of Marlborough’s play was the dashing loose forward rushes. Honours among the backs went to Karsten, Nelson fiveeighths, whose cut-in worried the defence all day. Stallard (centre), Taylor (full-back) and Lovell and Garguillo (forwards) were the pick of the remaining Nelson players. Marlboroughs best men were Jackson (full-back), Orr (five-eighths) and Hoare and Gale (forwards). NEW SOUTH WALES BEATS VICTORIA (Received June 11, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, J. ■>» 11. In an inter-state Rugby match New South Wales beat Victoria by 27 points to 6.
