WORK FOR YEAR REVIEWED
Tuatapere Athletic Society SUCCESS ENJOYED IN PAST SEASON The success enjoyed in the past season was discussed at the annual meeting of the Tuatapere Athletic Society on Saturday night. There was a good attendance. The annual report stated: “It is pleasing to record that, in spite of heavy expenditure, the society closed the year’s working with a good credit balance. Each year, the society expends a large proportion of its profits in effecting improvements to its grounds and buildings, and during the past year, substantial alterations were made to the luncheon booth. Such expenses should not recur, but it is felt that in another direction, namely, in the supply of trophies the society should I not be committed to such a heavy extent as was the case last year, when £2B was expended by the society. “UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS” “Once again the annual sports on New Year’s Day were an unqualified success, and the society is justified in viewing with pride the continued prosperity and popularity of the annual gathering. The record gate figures of £525 speak for themselves, and reflect not merely the effective control of the meeting, but also a high standard of competition in the various events. “It is worthy of note that our meeting this year was attended by Messrs W. M. Johnston and M. C. Parker, world’s champion axemen from Sydney, and it is to be hoped that theirs will be ( the first of many visits from Australian competitors. “The problem of coping with increased attendance and heavy car traffic has already been tackled by the committee, and several acres of land on the island opposite the domain have been ploughed and sown in oats for the purpose of providing additional parking space. “The society regrets the death of two valued members—Mr George Dainsley and Dr F. M. Dodds, and sincere sympathy is extended to their relations. “The thanks of the society are due to all those who gave trophies, and to all members and friends of the society who helped through unselfish service, to further the activities of this body.” The report was adopted.
