RAIL CAR SERVICES IN SOUTHLAND
APPRECIATION BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE A decision that it should write to the Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) expressing appreciation of the decision to start rail-car services in Southland and trusting that his promise made two years ago would become an accomplished fact in August, was made at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, yesterday. The secretary (Mr A. L. Adamson) said that he had written to the District Railways Traffic Manager in Invercargill (Mr A. E. Hargraeves) about the establishment of rail-car services, but since then an announcement had been made in the Press by Mr Sullivan stating that 10 cars would be available in August and that they would be delivered at the rate of one a fortnight. The statement said that three cars would be allotted to Southland and would be used on the following services: Inver-cargill-Gore-Lumsden, Invercargill-Winton-Lumsden and InvercargillBluff.
Satisfaction with the position was expressed by the president (Mr W. Grieve). A member said that he would like to see a car on the Bluff service first.
It was stated that they had fieen promised that the first car would be for the Lakes service.
Mr J. H. Reed moved that the Minister be thanked and the motion was carried.
