FIVE LIVES LOST IN MINE FIRE

TRAGEDY rIN LANCASHIRE LONDON, June 6. A fire in a seam 800 yards below the surface at the Astley Green colliery in Lancashire caused the loss of five lives, including that of the manager It is belived that three of the victims were cut off and that the others died attempting to save them. The rescuers risked gas in retrieving several of those injured. There were 1000 men in the mine who were sent to the surface. The area affected was eventually sealed to avoid more loss of life.
