The engagement is announced of Marion, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Coster,' Birchgrove, Scotts Gap, and Thomas William, third son of Mr G. A. Gough and the late Mrs Gough, Tweed street, Invercargill. Miss Mary Morris, Geraldine, arrives today to be the guest of Mrs R. P. Fish, Ramrig street.
Miss J. Woods, Elies road, and Miss K. Hanley, Spey street, were visitors to Dunedin last week-end. Mr and Msr Carson Shea and their children have returned to Invercargill after spending a holiday at Queenstown.
Misses A. and M. Hewitt, Winton, spent the week-end as the guests of Mrs E. R. Bryant, Ritchie street, Invercargill. Mrs Helm, Jenkin street, and Mrs G. Barnes, Morton street, who have been on holiday in Christchurch and Timaru, returned home last night? Miss Wynnis Armour entertained at morning tea yesterday in honour of Miss Jessie Tapper, who is shortly leaving for England. Mr and Mrs W. Boyd, Elies road, accompanied by their daughter Pamela, and Mrs C. R. Paton, spent the weekend at Lumsden as guests of Mrs Thomas Boyd, Royal Mail Hotel. An interesting afternoon was arranged yesterday by members of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Women’s Club. Cakes, savouries and biscuits, with recipes attached, were on display, and these created much interest among the members. A guessing competition was won by Mrs J. Watson.
In spite of the unpleasant weather there were 11 tables at play when St. Mary’s Bridge Club held its fortnightly function. The prize winners were: Auction, Mrs Dwyer; 500, Mrs Murfitt; hidden number, Mrs Neil Grace. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs Drury and Miss K. Grace. Mrs E. M. Brown recently entertained a number of friends at her home in Gala street in honour of the coming-of-age of her daughter Madeleine. Mr F. P. Cavanagh proposed the toast of the guest of honour which was replied to by Mr G. A. Boyce. Musical items were given by Misses F. Cooke and J. E. Brown. Those present were Mesdames E. M. Brown, C. Fenton, R. S. Brown, Mr and Mrs T. Harrison, Misses M. Brown, J. Gilbertson, V. Herbison, F. Cooke, M. Hynd, D. McEwan, A. Storrie, D. Rae, J. Taylor (Otapiri), J. Pearce (Otahu), J. Brown; Messrs J. L. McLean, C. Hassan, G. S. Taylor, G. A. Boyce, N. Turner, H. Gilbertson, D. Rogers (Gore), P. Fougere, S. Batcheler, G. Herbison, I. Gilbertson, C. Walsh, F. Cavanagh, S. Checketts and P. Cooke.
